De Blasio's own political career began with
a slot on the Community School Board for District 15, then a seat on the New York City Council, where he spent eight years representing Brooklyn (2001 to 2009).
Since some panels — the Citywide Council
on High
Schools for one — attracted lots of candidates, other
community boards did not have enough candidates to fill the available
slots — let alone hold a competitive election.
