The previous Spectre x360 generation used
a slower SSD that only managed 1,202 MB / s read and 583 MB / s write, so we're getting a worthy update in that regard.
That's a comfortable rate of 212 MBps, which would dwarf any laptop with a mechanical hard drive or
a slower SSD.
However, for large file transfers (1 GB or more),
the slower SSD speeds are slower than similarly configured laptops in this category.
Dell's Venue 11 Pro 7000 has a more colorful display and even longer battery life, but it has
a slower SSD and it runs hotter.
Unfortunately, we noticed lag when opening applications, owing in part to the Vivo Tab's relatively
slow SSD.

Getting an SSD is more important for overall performance than getting a faster processor, because even
a slow SSD is three to four times faster than the speediest mechanical hard drive.
As usual, while this is
a slow SSD, it doesn't actually result in a slow notebook.
Not exact matches
The MicroSD card slot in the bottom of the tablet will let you add more storage, but MicroSD cards are typically more than 10 times as
slow as an
SSD, especially when it comes to write speeds.
The Dell Venue 11 Pro's 64 GB
SSD's took 20 seconds to boot Windows 8.1,
slower than the 16 - second category average.
The W700 and Surface Pro, which also have 128 GB
SSDs, returned
slower transfer speeds of 138 Mbps and 124 Mbps, respectively.
The Venue 11 Pro and its 64 GB
SSD posted a
slower mark of 20 seconds.
With a boot time of 10 seconds, the ThinkPad Helix» 128 GB
SSD proved speedy, but it was just a few ticks
slower than the Elitebook Revolve 810's 8 - second boot time.
On the minus side you have only 2 GB of RAM and 64 GB in the base version (we're seeing a 4 GB, 128 GB version too) and if the
SSD is the same as I tested in the 13 ″ version, it's not as fast as the ASUS UX21 but it's not a
slow - coach either.
While the Transformer Book's 128 GB
SSD boots quickly, it transfers files much
slower than the competition.
This
SSD has read / write speeds of 530 / 510MB / s respectively, and IOPS speeds of 92K / 83K read / write, meaning it's only about 10 %
slower than a top performer like the Kingston or the Samsung, while coming in at a much lower price.
Cheaper
SSDs have slightly
slower read and write speeds, as well as usually lower capacity storage options.
Because this controller is completely digital and there are no moving parts, this means that
SSDs never
slow down.
SSD space is precious, and if there's anything you don't mind offloading to a
slower HDD, it's a great idea to do so.
Whether you're interested in one of the more expensive, faster solid state drives on this list, or one of the slightly
slower and less expensive (but still blazing quick) choices, an
SSD is certainly one of the best choices you can make to improve your computing life.
It's still a bit
slower than the Kingston HyperX, but given that it has less power impact, it's certainly a good choice if you're running an SLI or CrossFire graphics setup, or are worried about your PSU being able to handle a more power - hungry
SSD.
As you can see here, the Inspiron's mechanical 1 TB hard drive is a lot
slower than the G11DF's 256 GB
SSD.
How much
slower performance depends on your specific
SSD.
Sure, file system fragmentation can cause Windows to
slow down over time as well — but Windows automatically defragments your hard drive and defragmentation isn't even necessary on
SSDs.
The read time is so fast on
SSDs that you don't really need to build a file index and the actual process of indexing the drive and writing the index is
slow on
SSDs.
That's because
SSDs may
slow down as you fill them up, just like any other drive — but this was more helpful when
SSDs were tiny.
If an
SSD is sufficiently overprovisioned, it may not even be possible to
slow it down by filling it up with data.
Though it does indeed come standard with an
SSD (a Samsung - made one, in my case), these are of the
slower mSATA variety — not PCIe - based disks like we're used to seeing on other flagship laptops.
The ZBook is significantly faster than the Lenovo ThinkPad T470 (267.8 MBps, 256 GB PCIe
SSD) and the Dell Precision 5520 (462.7 MBps, 512 GB M. 2 PCIe
SSD), but
slower than the MacBook Pro 13 - inch (727MBps, 512 GB PCIe NVMe
SSD).
The A515 is upgradable, so you can replace the
slow hard drive with an
SSD later — you can get a 250 GB solid - state drive for about $ 90 and a 500 GB for about $ 140 — but most people should spend more up front to avoid the hassle.
And if Optane memory comes bundled, performance could increase further, though the 7th - gen system Intel used for comparison includes a
slower mechanical hard drive rather than an
SSD.
If you go with a hard drive because you get more storage for less money, know that it will be noticeably
slower than a solid - state drive (
SSD), though the higher cost and lower capacity of a faster
SSD may be a trade - off that some people are willing to make.
Whether it is booting the OS, running Windows Store apps, or even some light gaming, you would never suspect that the
SSD was by any means
slow.
Amazon also sells a more affordable $ 899 configuration, which features the same 1920 x 1080 display, fingerprint sensor and Asus pen, but bumps you down to a
slower Core i5 - 8250 processor, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of
SSD storage, and removes the discrete graphics in favor of integrated graphics.
That's
slower than the 531.34 MBps category average, as well as the speeds from the 512 GB PCIe
SSD in the ZBook Studio (508.92 MBps), the 512 GB PCIe M. 2
SSD in the ThinkPad P70 (848.2 MBps), the 512 GB
SSD in the MSI WE72 7RJ (848.2 MBps), and the 512 GB M. 2 PCIe
SSD in the Precision 5520 (462.66 MBps).
Unfortunately, although our unit came with a PCIe NVMe
SSD — the fastest type — the Toshiba XG4 drive Dell equipped it with was
slow and held back the Precision 7720's scores on a number of tests.
The refresh to Dell's outstanding budget gaming laptop (starting at about $ 800) is a good one, removing the
slow HDD - only storage option and introducing
SSD as standard.
The paging file can also be moved to another drive — for example, you could move it from a small
SSD to a
slower, larger hard drive.
You'll probably notice it's
slower, USB 2.0 is very
slow compared to
SSDs.
For one, all the storage options rely on an Intel Rapid Hybrid system that is a mishmash of a relatively fast
SSD for the OS, and a
slower, mechanical hard disk drive for mass storage.
The version of the ZenBook Pro we have for review has the
slower PCIe
SSD which shows compared to some of the top laptops out there with NVMe
SSDs on board.
Some cheap laptops have eMMC storage, which is kind of like an
SSD in that it's solid - state storage — but, unlike an
SSD, is very, very
slow.
Like SD cards, MMC cards and their interfaces are much
slower than an
SSD.
This would make writing to an
SSD slower over time.
Aside from the
slower processor and graphics changes, the non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro has the same faster
SSD and the same improved display, along with the same design changes.
The PC's 1 TB, 7,200 - rpm hard drive copied about 5 GB of files at a rate of 52.46 MBps, which is significantly
slower than the Y700's 128 GB
SSD (110.6 MBps) and the Asus G20's 256 GB
SSD (171.3 MBps).
Mechanical hard drives will be
slower than
SSDs, which is why they're being phased out.
When you boot your computer, it should now boot a bit
slower — perhaps just a few seconds longer on an
SSD — but the Num Lock key will be enabled at boot.
Despite the
slower speeds for productivity apps such as Microsoft Office and Windows Store apps the SATA
SSD felt just fine in regular usage, and it's clearly faster than a standard hard disk drive (HDD).
A perfect storm of entry - level RAM, modest
SSD write speeds, and lack of Hyper - Threading makes for a
slow effort, which we didn't expect.
