Enrico David's recent exhibition comprised mostly
figurative,
small - scale
sculptures.
Paintings and some
small sculptures, predominantly black and white, ranging from pure to
figurative abstraction; photo collages on paper and aluminum panel.
The «Cosm»
sculptures are surrounded by a series of
small paintings whose vertical format echoes the
figurative character of the
sculptures, placing the two distinct types of object in dialogue.
Dramatically offsetting the
small works on wooden panel (ranging from 10 x 7 1/2 inches to 18 x 24 inches) are two life - size

In the catalogue accompanying the exhibition, art critic Donald Kuspit writes: «Carol Ross gives us two kinds of
sculpture: large, free ‐ standing works, implicitly monumental, sometimes evocative of nature, sometimes
figurative, and
smaller wall pieces,
sculptures as flat as the wall on which they are placed as though they were paintings.
I was visually confused by his work as it encompassed so many different styles from abstract to
figurative, collage to
sculpture, and many
small surrealistic installations.
More recently, Upritchard's work has, in part, focused on
small - scale voodoo - like
figurative sculptures that reflect on the naivety of 1960s and»70s alternative culture.

«Abstraction / Figuration,» a dense, various and luminous exhibition of
figurative sculptures and nearly 50
small works on paper, most from the past decade, reminds us just how fresh and exhilarating Abstract Expressionism, in the right hands, continues to be.
