Wols's first U.S. retrospective at the Menil Collection, which has among the largest and widest - ranging public holdings of his paintings and works on paper, aggravates the historical slight by splitting the
show between two of the
museum's
smaller exhibition galleries on opposite sides of the building.

museums in DC he moved into the realm of curating, staging a variety of solo, duo and
small - group
shows for the Evolve Urban Arts Project.
At the Israel
Museum in Jerusalem, painter Israel Hershberg is currently
showing four landscape paintings: two Umbrian landscapes, a view of Tel Kakun in Israel's Hefer Valley and a
small preparatory work done in the Roman Campagna this past summer.
In the gallery, two
small sculptures by Smith, one never
shown before, are surrounded by works donated by Smith to the
museum: a 1949 Pollock, a 1951 Clyfford Still, works by Theodoros Stamos (never
shown before) and Ralph Humphrey and a 1949 Mark Rothko, acquired in 1967, which has an interesting history at the
museum.
This exhibition, Fraser's first solo
museum show, introduces a selection of large and
small - scale paintings, drawings, and «cut - outs.»
It's a
small step in the right direction, but the institutions that house this
show (it continues on to the Whitney
Museum of American Art this November) are missing an opportunity for a more profound course correction.
In this essay Judd surveys a number of New York's most significant
museums («The exceedingly impressive Frick Collection is
small enough to be seen in a few hours»; «It is The
Museum of Modern Art which has
shown the power and quality of American Art»), as well as an assessment of notable galleries, singling out Green Gallery, an uptown gallery that
showed work by downtown artists.
With major loans from the Uffizzi, the British
Museum, the Ashmolean, the Getty, the National Gallery in Washington, and other major institutions, this exhibition is a
smaller version of a major monographic
show that was at the Getty this summer.
