Nanotechnology is a group of emerging technologies in which the structure of matter is controlled at the nanometer scale, the scale of
small numbers of atoms, to produce novel materials and devices that have useful and unique properties.
The challenge was to explain how genes act lawfully, and cause organisms to behave lawfully, while being composed of a very
small number of atoms, a significant proportion of which may be behaving unlawfully.
Most of these molecules contain
a small number of atoms, and only a few molecules with eight or more atoms have been found in interstellar clouds.

We're talking about statistical possibilities that are astronomically
small, exceeding the
number of atoms we even have in the known universe.
Exposing a
small cluster
of neon
atoms to a very short and intense burst
of extreme ultraviolet light initiates a novel mechanism that produces a large
number of electrons and ions.
The particles did not scatter as much as expected, indicating they were hitting an unexpectedly
small number of hydrogen
atoms.
Indeed, under these conditions an
atom belonging to a given sublattice has only a very
small number of neighbors (one or two) in each
of the other sublattices, and the molecular field method, which consists in replacing the instantaneous action
of an
atom by that
of an average
atom, will be more likely to yield a correct result, the larger the
number of atoms to which it is applied.
By growing iron
atoms into incredibly
small particles, Zhang increases the
number of electrons they release as much as 1,000-fold.
The ATRAP group, Gabrielse says, made the choice to increase the
number of atoms in the trap rather than increasing the sensitivity
of the instruments to detect
small numbers of anti-
atoms, as ALPHA has done.
Prime
numbers — the
numbers that can't be split up into
smaller factors and are thus the
atoms of arithmetic — have an almost holy status today.
If the amount is
smaller than expected based on the
number of positronium
atoms that entered the chamber, then some
of it may be turning into mirror matter.
Creating even
small numbers of fusing
atoms would be a big deal.
«It's a highly accurate technique based on the quantum Monte Carlo method — a family
of algorithms but usually limited to a
small number of particles — that we have developed in order to consider now a large
number of atoms, and obtain an almost realistic situation.
The researchers also hope to gain insight into the make - up
of the very early universe, by studying the hydrogen and helium
atoms that are being illuminated by the
small number of very bright stars within the Little Cub — which also has the less romantic name SDSS J1044 +6306.
Methods: Diphenylphosphine ligands, which consist
of two phenyl (C6H5) substituted phosphorus centers separated by a carbon chain
of variable length, produce gold clusters with extremely narrow distributions in size; that is, the synthesis route produces a large quantity
of clusters with the same
number of gold
atoms as well as a
small number of clusters with similar
numbers of atoms.
Nanotechnology refers to manipulating the structure
of matter on a length scale
of some
small number of nanometers, interpreted by different people at different times as meaning anything from 0.1 nm (controlling the arrangement
of individual
atoms) to 100 nm or more (anything
smaller than microtechnology).
A
number of infinitesimally
small, dust devil — like energy vortices called quarks and photons collectively make up the structure
of the
atom.
