Ingredients: 4 tablespoons cup peanut, grapeseed or other high - heat oil, divided usage (plus more as needed) 1/2 pound chicken, cut into
small pieces (I used Quorn tenders) 8 ounces, fideo pasta or angel hair pasta broken into 2 ″
pieces 1 medium onion, diced 1 red bell pepper, seeded and diced 1 green bell pepper, seeded and diced 1 handful sugar snap peas, strings and both ends removed, cut into 1 ″
pieces (optional, but great for Spring) 1 tablespoon sweet paprika 1 teaspoon sea salt 1 large pinch saffron
threads, crumbled 2 cups broth or stock (I used 1 cup vegetable, 1 cup clam juice) 1/2 pound shrimp, deveined and peeled 1/2 pound bay scallops, rinsed and patted dry with a paper towel 1 (15 ounce) can crushed or petite diced tomatoes 1/4 cup brandy or cognac 1/2
of a fresh lemon extra sea salt, as needed for seasoning
Do this a few times, then feed the needle and
thread all the way through the big bead, then the
small loop on the earring hook and then all the way back through, to connect all
of the
pieces and tie a nice secure knot on the underside
of the bundle.
The
small miracle
of it, then, is that in both its absolute glee in finding the line
of how much gore to show and then crossing it (a pair
of glasses stop a hypodermic needle... but only for a moment) and its surprising efforts at locating a deeper
thread in a frayed brother / sister relationship and the impact
of drug addiction, Alvarez's film is a solid, even affecting genre
piece that allows for an abundance
of memorable money shots.
After the scale
of some
of the other work in Feral 4 Ryan's work was
small, limited to a number
of small boxes containing a number
of found objects, collections
of words, black ink and the bits and
pieces of an exhibition space, masking tape
threads etc..
Other standout works in the show include a series
of thread - on - paper - pulp
pieces, such as Blueprint (2014), which depicts the façade
of 348 West 22nd Street with a lone figure behind it; Facing Myself (2014), a circular rendering
of male and female figures melding into one; Myselves (2013), showing a series
of heads floating out
of one body; and My Homes (2014), which portrays three walking figures carrying what appears to be a
small house — one holds it externally, another internally in his body and the last «carries» it in his mind.
As the child cuts each
piece of yarn (the length reflecting the intensity
of the worry), write the worry in magic marker on a
small piece of paper and tape it on the yarn (this helps delineate one worry
thread from another).
I created the white garland out
of crochet
thread, a
piece of faux wool (Jo - Anns) and some
small paper doilies from Michaels.
