Because of
small sample
size, the changes in tumor - initiating cell number were not significant (P > 0.05), but these data are supportive of the in vitro findings and suggest that hypoxia may have a
positive effect on the tumor - initiating cell population in ER - α —
positive breast cancers and a negative
effect in ER - α — negative tumors.
Due to the relatively
small sample
sizes, all of the
effects are imprecisely estimated and do not allow us to definitively rule out reasonably large
positive effects.
In 11 of the 18 nations, the estimate of the
effects of class
size were
positive and statistically significant, suggesting that students in larger classes perform significantly better than students in
smaller classes.
One of the most widely admired educational studies is the Tennessee STAR class
size project, which established that
small classes had a significant
positive effect on student achievement.
In addition, although it was not significant, there was a
small positive effect (
effect size:.27) for the COPE program with respect to the behavioral symptoms index composite 3 months after discharge.
There were no significant differences in reports of PTSD symptoms in the COPE and control groups 1 and 3 months after hospitalization, although there was a
small positive effect (
effect size:.22) for the COPE program at 3 months.
For example, the Queensland study documented higher - quality home environments for families in the intervention.75 Likewise,
positive effects were observed on measures of the home environment in Alaska.76 Among multi-component programs, both Early Head Start77 and the Infant Health and Development Program78 reported higher - quality home environments in the intervention groups, though
effect sizes tended to be
small.
In addition, although values were not significantly different, there was a
small positive effect (
effect size:.42) of the COPE program on attention problems 6 months after hospitalization.
Although they were not statistically significant, there were
small positive effects of the COPE program on aggression (
effect size:.41), anxiety (
effect size:.29), and attention problems (
effect size:.20).
The
size of the CfC impacts on most outcomes was
small, but can be considered
positive relative to what was observed in the early phase of the UK Sure Start evaluation.3 The current results are also comparable in
size to those found in the later impact evaluation of the Sure Start programme, in which 3 - year - old children were exposed to mature SSLP throughout their entire lives.4 Reviews of the effectiveness of early childhood interventions have found that most studies reported
effect sizes on parenting and child outcomes that were
small to moderate.14 15 When comparing CfC and SSLP with other interventions, it is important to remember that the evaluations of these interventions measured
effects on an entire population, rather than on programme participants, as is the case in the evaluation of many other interventions.
The evidence base suggests that while Responding in Peaceful and
Positive Ways (RIPP) showed promising results with urban African American school children (see Study 1), the program showed inconsistent results with
small effect sizes when administered to schools in a rural setting with majority white schoolchildren (see Study 2).
Two of these studies found one or more significant
positive effect; 39, 43 however, one of the studies also found a significant negative
effect.43 Two studies found no significant
effects of the parenting interventions.44, 46
Small to medium
effect sizes were reported for the majority of the studies with statistically significant results (Cohen's d 0.33 — 0.60).
Among the several components they examined, maternal
positive affect during the interactions had the
smallest effect size (Lovejoy et al. 2000).
