At a given sigma *, the disk galaxies have significantly
smaller black hole masses, with a larger scatter, than the early - type galaxies.

Black holes heavier than 10 solar
masses should have long ago settled to the centers of
small galaxies, churning up stars with their gravity like bowling balls setting the pins flying.
The team's simulations show that 70 to 98 % of the middleweight
black holes at the hearts of clusters were ejected, depending on the assumptions used, such as the
mass of the
small black holes and the initial
mass of the middleweight
black hole.
Small black holes the size of stars and the supermassive variety are familiar, but until now there have only been tentative signs of intermediate -
mass black holes.
LIGO's second detection featured two
smaller black holes, 14 and eight times the
mass of the sun (SN: 7/9/16, p. 8).
And this would hold true even if the
smaller black hole has only 20 percent of its
mass.
They may be a new class of midsize
black holes, weighing 100 solar
masses or so, which could have formed either by the collision of
smaller black holes or by the death of supermassive stars.
Intermediate -
mass black holes are thought to form either from the merging of several
smaller, stellar -
mass black holes, or as a result of a collision between massive stars in dense clusters.
Astrophysical giants several times the
mass of the sun and midget
black holes smaller than a subatomic particle could provide glimpses of an extra-dimensional existence.
LIGO has previously spotted mergers of swirling
black holes with
masses tens of times that of the sun (SN Online: 9/27/17); the
smaller masses of the orbiting duo pointed the finger at neutron stars.
The
black holes distort the distribution of
mass in the early universe, adding a
small fluctuation that has consequences hundreds of millions of years later, when the first stars begin to form.
The eminent theoretical physicist John Archibald Wheeler quipped that «
black holes have no hair,» meaning they're all identical except for three key distinguishing characteristics:
mass, rotation and a vanishingly
small electric charge.
Astronomers have long predicted the existence of
black holes larger than those formed from single stars, but
smaller than the million or billion solar
mass ones lurking at the centers of galaxies.
«
Black Holes from the Beginning of Time,» by Juan García - Bellido and Sébastien Clesse, incorrectly states that in the 1970s Bernard Carr and Stephen Hawking proposed primordial black holes only with masses smaller than a mountain's that would have evaporated long

masses smaller than a mountain's that would have evaporated long ago.
Depending on the
mass of the
black holes, they could have anywhere from a fraction of a second together (for a
black hole the
mass of a planet or star) to days or even weeks (for a
black hole with the
mass of a
small galaxy or more).
The results indicate the
black hole in question is about 100 times the
mass of the sun, putting it right at the border between
small and medium
black holes.
That's much too big for them to have been built up through the slow mergers of
small black holes formed in the conventional way, from collapsed stars a few dozen times the
mass of the sun.
There are two different
black hole scenarios proposed to explain these objects: (1) they contain very «big»
black holes that could be more than a thousand times more massive than the Sun (Note 1), or (2) they are relatively
small black holes, «little monsters» with
masses no more than a hundred times that of the Sun, that shine at luminosities exceeding theoretical limits for standard accretion (called «supercritical (or super-Eddington) accretion,» Note 2).
Simulations have long suggested that many
smaller black holes, with
masses close to the sun's, also exist in the centres of galaxies including the Milky Way, but only one has ever been found.
As with any
black hole, the beast at the heart of our galaxy packs all its multimillion - star
mass into a space
smaller than an atom — infinitely
small, in fact, according to Einstein's general theory of relativity.
But because the phenomenon in M82 is much
smaller, astronomers think its source objects must be more garden - variety
black holes with
masses on the order of dozens of suns.
The technique has been used on
smaller black holes, but it has never before been applied to intermediate -
mass black holes.
Yet
smaller galaxies are inherently more common than bigger ones, so a
black hole of given
mass is more likely to be found in a smallish galaxy and hence appear oversized.
Of red matter, Phil Plait complained in Bad Astronomy, «The red matter
black hole would be incredibly
small, probably
smaller than an atom, and that would make it hard to gobble down enough
mass to grow rapidly.»
Big
black holes are spawned when a dying star collapses, packing so much
mass into such a
small space that gravity becomes overwhelmingly powerful.
Mészáros notes that the gravitational waves looked like they came from objects
smaller in
mass than
black holes, which pointed to neutron stars, and that the electromagnetic emissions separately correlated to the event provide two ways to show proof - positive that this is a neutron star merger.
The
black hole surrounded by the
small galactic remnant is currently speeding away from the core of the much larger galaxy, and will continue to lose more
mass as it does so.
The «smoking gun» would be if a
black hole in a merger was
smaller than 1.45 solar
masses: Below this so - called Chandrasekhar limit, no
black holes can form after a stellar explosion — it would have to form in another process, making it more likely to be primordial.
«Astrophysicists have been collecting observational evidence for both stellar
mass black holes and supermassive
black holes for decades, but even though we think the largest ones grow from the
smallest ones, we've never really had clear evidence for a
black hole with a
mass in between those extremes,» she added.
eLISA will be able to detect the gravitational waves from
smaller supermassive
black holes (those in the tens of thousands to few million solar
mass range) and from compact binary stars.
The
mass of the
black hole is somewhat arbitrary — the distorting
hole could be a big one far away, or a
smaller one close by.
In most galaxies the central
black hole would have been
smaller than the billions of solar
mass black holes for quasars.
When Soria and his team of researchers measured P13's
mass, they found that the
black hole was actually on the
smaller side, suggesting that
black holes can consume more gas and produce more light than previously believed.
