Put the
gear lever into drive and just tickle the throttle and we're off, the dual - clutch gearbox automatically picking up first, second and then third as we lightfoot it through the
small town heading out into the country.
The vehicle is primarily rear wheel driven, but a
small rotary switch behind the
gear lever can be used to engage 4WD high or 4WD low.
It's not all good news, however, as the screen for the infotainment system is disappointingly
small and the shiny black finish on the centre console and around the
gear lever doesn't look particularly rich either.
The BMW has got an electronic parking brake, but there's a conventional
gear lever, so your centre console storage options are the
small lidded tray above the climate controls, fixed twin cupholders and a rather deep tray beneath the front armrest, where you'll find AUX, USB and a 12V socket.
The other six switches, placed each three to the left and right of the
gear lever, for the adjustment of the suspension, ESP, exhaust system, start / stop function, rear aerofoil and transmission logics are easy to operate with just a
small tap of the finger.
There's another,
smaller shifter near the
gear lever that allows you to shift into four - wheel drive.
The
gear lever moves smoothly, and the clutch pedal requires no more effort than what you'd expend in a
small sedan.
The centre console also features a
small T piece
gear lever with its simple Park, Reverse, Neutral and Drive layout.
The EcoSport gets
small changes to the interiors such as the aluminium finished
gear lever and inside door handles, the silver strip on the door pads, the chrome trims on the instrument cluster and of course the leather - wrapped handbrake which is now placed towards the driver's seat unlike the previous model where it was positioned close to the passenger's seat.
Drivers also have the option to shift
gears manually in Sport, but only via the
small «+ / -» buttons on the
gear lever; there's no traditional tiptronic function or paddle shifters on the steering.
It includes additional features for both exterior and interior: 21» Seven Twin Spoke alloy wheels and door panels with perforated hide, luxurious diamond - quilted seats with
smaller quilting for a more contemporary design look, a tactile knurled
