Two
small paintings in this exhibition are the most original, with deft paint handling that is at once fauvist and expressionistic.
Both presenting new canvases and working on a large scale —
the smallest painting in the exhibition is 6 feet tall — the two artists» paintings are hung alternating around the gallery space.

I guess that's one of the things that makes them different from photographs,
in that a photograph might be a record, a snap, one moment — a
painting I think is about creating a
small world around that photo... I really like that idea of something that you can enter like a box or an
exhibition space, and enter these little rooms which for me are memories, but it's not about nostalgia — it's more about setting up something that's still living — so it's almost they're all
in the present, rather than
in the past.»
Very

After a long absence following his last solo show at Paula Cooper (
in 1977), Van Buren's work finally began filtering back into public view
in New York about 10 years ago, first at
small venues such as Mitchell Algus Gallery and Sideshow, and
in the revelatory

For this
exhibition the pieces were chosen not only because of their life and vibrancy, but because of their
small size; I feel that there is an immediate transaction that takes you into them and because they are
small, the relationship of the
paintings to the body is different — one has to get up close to see them, find the complexity, detail and subtlety that lies
in wait for the patient observer.
Among a selection of her
small scale collage
paintings, you'll see three fabric - based modular books she made for her recent
exhibition at the State Silk Museum
in Tbilisi, Georgia.

There were just five George McNeil
paintings in Perlow's tiny space this winter, but even this
small number made me wishfor a full - on museum
exhibition of this underknown artist.
In addition to the artist's more refined, contemplative
paintings, the
exhibition devotes a space to his
smaller - scale, sometimes fragmentary drawings.
