Once I started
doing my own laundry, I experimented with
recipes for laundry
soap.
I've found that they don't
do much good when mixed into the
recipe, but can be great when added to especially dirty loads of laundry along with the homemade
soap.
I tried plain liquid castile
soap, which left a tangled mess, and I tried a bunch of homemade
recipes that didn't work well at all.
A lot of cleaning
recipes use vinegar as a disinfectant, but vinegar and
soap do not mix when it comes to cleaners.
A lot of DIY
recipes call for castile
soap, which is great for so many things, but doesn't have quite the same «oomph» as store - bought dish
soap.
I make homemade shaving
soap for him to go in the mug (
recipe here) but there are also some good ones available if you don't want to make it.
Using essential oil scented
soap in my DIY
recipe solved this problem somewhat, but I realized that the scent didn't stick around after the clothes were dried.
I don't think you can make or buy dish
soap much cheaper than this
recipe.
Beware of sham DIY dish
soaps:
DO NOT use a
recipe that mixes vinegar with castile
soap.
I
do my cold process
soap recipes, by adding hot lye solution to my room temperature oils / fats.
Soap recipes are
done by weight because the ratio of oil to lye needs to be fairly exact.

I actually pretty much almost exclusively make this
recipe these days, and don't really bother making the liquid Castile
soap made with olive oil, or the mixed Dr. Bronner's Copycat liquid Castile
soap.
I use both types interchangeably in
soap recipes, and don't see much of a difference, if any between using one or the other.
Love
soap recipes that don't overcomplicate things.

soap recipe is customized to use full bottles of most of the oils, so you don't have a lot of inventory lying around, and you don't have to
do a lot of measuring.
For this
recipe, I
did not keep my empty hand
soap bottles.
