Our research focuses on a wide range of policy sectors that affect
the social determinants of health including social security, health systems, trade, urban land - use, digital technologies and Indigenous health.
The social determinants of health include the commonly accepted ones, including employment, education, income, community safety, and also overlaps with what is called health infrastructure: secure and accessible healthy food supplies, housing for health and health - enhancing community infrastructure.

Dr. Ballantyne's research interests
include the
social determinants of health, aging and the life course and lay experience
of illness, with an emphasis on public access to and use
of pharmaceuticals.
She publishes widely in the
social determinants of health equity,
including in trade and investment, urbanisation, food systems, and climate change; and the analysis
of governance, policy and regulatory processes and their effectiveness at addressing
health inequities.
Speakers said the role must be set up for success and judged on whether it leads to reduced
health inequalities in rural and remote Australia compared to metropolitan Australia, with the need to address the
social determinants of health,
including poverty, inequality, racism and prejudice.

Similar initiatives are underway in nursing,
including innovative programs that are graduating new cohorts
of Indigenous midwives.25 In addition, the ACCHSs have always had a major role in Aboriginal
health worker (AHW) training, and the introduction
of national AHW registration will standardise the quality
of this important component
of the
health workforce.26 The services» ability to deal with the impact
of social determinants and lower
health literacy is due, in part, to ACCHSs being significant providers
of Aboriginal employment and training.
Its focus was on policy areas that powerfully influence the «
social determinants of health» and that are addressed in the CRE - SDHE program
of work
including Indigenous affairs, urban environments,
social protection and
health systems.
This needs to start with the idea
of caring for patients and their
health, sharing the vision with all relevant parties,
including the Aboriginal community controlled sector, and embracing more firmly both equity and the

We found that the participating South Australian state government managed and funded services had moved away from an approach to primary
health care that

The current Australian Indigenous
health policy environment has developed in parallel with increasing recognition
of broader concepts
of health that involve
social determinants —
including peace, education and
social justice, and equity — as enunciated in documents such as the Ottawa Charter11 and repeated in Australian strategic documents such as the Ways forward blueprint for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander mental
health.12 Unfortunately, the implementation
of such strategies appears to be held back by a lack
of coordination between federal and state governments and departments in terms
of effective administrative responsibility for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
health and
social determinants.
The report notes that, «Given the increased recognition
of how profoundly
social determinants of health (
including Adverse Childhood Experiences) affect childhood development and adulthood

social productivity, payment models need to consider how to motivate and support attention in this area.»
Unique
determinants of obesity in Aboriginal children and families
include experiences
of colonialism, racism and
social exclusion, and inequities in the
social determinates
of health, and these need to be considered in prevention strategies (Willows et al. 2012).
Her current research interests
include historic and contemporary systemic and structural impacts on the development
of early childhood programs and services in Canada;
social determinants of health with particular emphasis on colonization and children's rights; children's cultural identity formation and the exploration and articulation
of Indigenous epistemologies and ontologies.
Her books
