as an American: the importance of civic education
as part of a well - rounded education.
For two decades much has been written about the potential impact of technology on
social studies education, both
as a pedagogical tool and
as a
topic for exploration (Whitworth & Berson, 2003).
Will technological innovations only ever impact
social studies curriculum and instruction on the margins —
as dedicated, risk - taking teachers integrate out - of - the - box
topics such
as presidential propaganda (Journell, 2009) or tackle challenging instructional models such
as digital documentaries (Manfra & Hammond, 2008; Schul, 2012; Hofer & Swan, 2006)?
All of these
topics can potentially enter into a
social studies class — whether
as history, geography, civics, economics, or a
social science.
Retaining an explicit emphasis in the new standards on including «opportunities for students to
study relationships among science, technology, and society» (Hicks et al., 2014, Table 1) would open the door to consideration of a set of issues that every future teacher ought to be thinking about, for example, the power relationships enacted online
as manifest through sexism, racism, anti-Semitism, and homophobia; the quality of the discourse and information that circulates there and the effects of rumor on reputation; notions of public and private in a digital age; cyber bullying and suicide; copyright and plagiarism; ethics and professional responsibilities related to
social media; and a host of other
topics and questions that a critical media literacy approach could raise regarding technology and citizenship education.
Reading comprehension is the main goal of the Reading Eggs program, but the reading content connects to science,
social studies, and math

While a formal civics course is not offered until high school, kindergarten students learn to «identify personal traits, such
