The long - term potential predictability of
soil water variations in combination with the slow regrowth of vegetation after major disruptions leads to enhanced predictability on decadal timescales for vegetation, terrestrial carbon stock, and fire frequency, in particular in the Southern United States (US) / Mexico region.
Soil water variations in the Northern US are more tightly coupled with vegetation variability than in the Southern US / Mexico index region.

Such is the
variation in mesoclimate and
soil type from one patch of grapes to the next, that we assess
water requirements for each individual vineyard, only applying
water as required.
In this case, the researchers combined records of ancient lake levels, location and extent of glaciation,
variations in the composition of stalagmites in caves, and evidence for changes in vegetation and subsurface
soil deposits associated with
water table depth.
Remote - sensing devices that are sensitive to minute
variations in the
water content of
soil revealed the footprints of vanished houses,
water tanks, canals, and even historic rice fields, leading researchers to conclude that Angkor is most likely the world's largest archaeological site, a sprawling low - density metropolis covering an area larger than New York City.
Analyses revealed that cherry fruit size was minimally affected by
soil and
water management, although
variations were closely associated with
variations in cropload.
The daily electrical - capacitance
variations decreased when
soil moisture was below the wilting point and completely ceased below the
soil volumetric
water content of 11 percent, suggesting that the effect of
water stress on electrical capacitance was observed through its impact on photosynthesis.
Changes in production are directly linked to
variations in temperature and precipitation during the growing season and often to the offseason changes in weather because of
soil water storage to replenish the
soil profile.
Variations would be: adding a fan to circulate the air, adding dry
soil, adding
water to the
soil, and, just for fun, replicating the atmosphere of Venus.
Diurnal
variation in stem girth as affected by three different ranges (0.43, 1.78 and 2.11 kPa) of air vapour pressure deficit (VPD) under minimum
soil water stress was studied in mature rubber trees (Hevea brasiliensis) in Northeast Thailand.
Our control simulation further suggests that decadal
variations in
soil water storage also affect vegetation and wildfire occurrences.
Although our results are based on an idealized modeling framework that captures only naturally occurring climate
variations, they clearly suggest that decadal climate predictions for
soil hydrological conditions are feasible and may become beneficial for forestry,
water management, and agriculture.
We have evaluated the potential decadal predictability of
variations in
soil water, vegetation, and fire frequency over North America using the low resolution version of the earth system model CESM.
