«By using our glass and advanced material expertise to make
solar thermal power plants more efficient and reliable, SCHOTT is part of the reason why communities in sunbelt areas around the world are increasingly exploring the use of solar thermalpower to satisfy their growing energy needs.»

Because concentrating
solar thermal power plants on only five percent of the USA's desert lands could generate
more electricity than the entire country uses.
Among other points, Mr. Romm says the «fourth generation» form of nuclear
power discussed by Dr. Hansen has no greater potential benefits than other technologies (
solar -
thermal power plants, for example) that were not mentioned but that could be deployed at large scale much
more quickly.
Several large, new
solar thermal power plants are expected to begin commercial operation by the end of 2013,
more than doubling the
solar thermal generating capacity in the United States.
This research follows a pair of studies by the International Energy Agency foreseeing that
solar power — in a combination of photovoltaic and
solar thermal plants — could supply
more than a quarter of the world's electricity by 2050.
The supply is unreliable, although
more consistent than wind generation which is notoriously unreliable and
thermal, nuclear, or hydro
power (if available) is required to carry sufficient reserve in the grid system to compensate for any changes in
solar plant output due to any changes in sunlight during the day.
Adding carbon and capture technology to new coal
plants makes electricity from coal
more expensive than energy from
solar thermal and wind
power, even when «firming costs» are included for alternatives (see table).
In addition, the Energy Commission has a historic high level of
more than 30 proposed projects under review, totaling
more than 12,000 megawatts, many of which are large - scale
solar thermal power plants that present new and challenging environmental impacts that must be considered.
A concentrating
solar thermal power plant, even with molten salt storage, may work better with computers, nanostructured absorbers, and other advantages of modern technology, but it doesn't require tech any
more sophisticated than 1800's steam engines.
