As the comet gets closer to the sun, a protective bubble develops around 67P, data from the mission showed; that bubble would
prevent solar wind particles or other ionized particles from reaching the comet's surface, Altwegg says.
That came when the European Space Agency's Cluster satellites passed far above an auroral spot in March 2002 and detected a cascade of
solar wind particles inside the magnetosphere.
The peaks of those «waves» could mean there are
more solar wind particles locally, increasing X-ray emissions near Pluto in spite of the sluggish solar wind.
A gaping coronal hole in the shape of the Greek letter Pi sprawled across the top of the star's surface, spewing high -
speed solar wind particles into space.
«Our findings are the first to suggest that prominences are sources of significant wave generation in the inner corona, and could therefore contribute to the acceleration
of solar wind particles,» says team member Shadia Habbal.
The new observations were made with several instruments on SOHO, which is stationed about 900,000 miles (1.5 million kilometers) sunward of the Earth in interplanetary space, where it has an uninterrupted view of the Sun and of
the solar wind particles blown from the Sun.
Here,
solar wind particles can head inwards towards Earth, filling up the magnetosphere with energetic particles.
