The idea, however, that we
as humans are so important to the universe's creator that we required the bloody violent
sacrifice of his
son, that is to say himself, seems strangely arrogant considering how minor a part of the universe we are.

As for why God allowed the Egyptians to die, God saved his chosen people from certain death by killing those who would surely cause the same.
As Søren Kierkegaard noted in perhaps his most influential book, Fear and Trembling, if the story of Abraham's attempted
sacrifice of his
son means anything it must signify that God transcends the categories (or at least our categories) of good and evil and that to follow the way of the Lord will eventually, at least for some select chosen ones, mean to renounce those norms.
