Levels are much shorter with little areas I could choose to explore for a quick reward before blasting right through with
sonic speed on the main path, and this freedom of choice ultimately motivated me (not forced me) to detour for hidden treasures.

Years ago, when
Sonic Team brought their mascot into the world of 3D games they tended to focus solely
on going fast, and the lack of control that this pursuit of
speed brought was pretty damaging to the overall experience, so it's good to see the developer's slowing things down a bit.

However, in modern
Sonic, I feel too much emphasis is
on speed — you barely have any chance to look at the level as you rocket through it these days and the levels are designed to only have one main route through them — there's no exploration or tricky platforming segments anymore.
I must admit this was a turnoff at first, but I actually found that I got used to it the more I played, and got the hang of a few tricks as well — in all honesty, while I feel that
Sonic isn't as fast as he used to be, it's because the game has more of a focus
on maintaining
speed and learning how to navigate the level without losing it.
Deeply parallaxed backgrounds full of rich detail add to the sense of
speed, which
Sonic Mania isn't shy about relying
on.
In the E3 build and earlier versions of the game, triggering
Sonic's blurry feet took longer than it did in the original games, and in some cases you'd be running at near maximum
speed but wouldn't have the blur going
on.
On the subject of running really fast, one of the other big things people noted was the
speed at which
Sonic would accelerate into his full run
speed, trademarked by the blurry feet from the original
Sonic games.
Tinertia is built
on the premise of Quake - like fun,
Sonic - like
speed, and precision controls... all without a jump button.
These types of stages require quick reaction
speed at key points in order to stay
on the move much like what we expect from a 3 - D

Sonic Adventure was a giant leap in platform - style gaming back when it first launched
on the Dreamcast in 1999, not only because it brought a great deal of fun to the table, but because it brought with it a tremendous sense of
speed, and not only that... it was actually done well!
Ever since
Sonic the Hedgehog arrived
on the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis back in 1991, the
speed loving mascot has starred in several platformers which take place in both two and three dimensions.
Classic
Sonic works relatively the same way, but instead of a dash attack, he can hurt enemies by just jumping
on top of them, which can be frustrating when navigating Forces» levels built around platforming rather than
speed.
This happens more so
on those areas that have quite a few obstacles or enemies... it also made me a little ill due to the high
speed nature of
Sonic.
On top of that,
Sonic will only run at a decent
speed if the Y button is held down at all times.
When performed correctly, the attack will keep up
Sonic's
speed, although there are a few instances where the automatic lock -
on doesn't work all that well.
Sonic Forces is a modern 3D take

Sonic games in 3D, putting the brakes
on the
speed rushes for platforming actions such as moving to a certain spot, drains all the fun.
