I'm very sorry to see John Marburger, who has connections with many people I know, reduced to
this sort of apologist's role.

Much
of the value
of this dialogue for process philosophers lies in following along precisely the
sorts of things that Hausman and I said, for these are the
sorts of things nearly all process philosophers say about Bergson, even those such as Hausman and I, who are very sympathetic to Bergson and try to study him closely (although admittedly, Hausman is really more a Peircean and I am more a Whiteheadian, and Gunter is really Bergson's true
apologist).
I wouldn't call myself a Sissoko
apologist but I did stick up for him and
sort of viewed him as a minutes eater that would at worst cause no harm and have himself the occasional brilliant moment.
Allied is unusually linear, after the initial setup: Max is told he married a German spy in Marianne; against orders and behind Marianne's back, he sets out to disprove it.2 The
apologist urge is to call it a maturation
of Zemeckis's style, to tell a story so simply and economically (even if we've kind
of been here before with Cast Away), but the film feels conspicuously underdeveloped as opposed to streamlined, to the extent that the big reveal seems as if it was decided on a coin toss; it's easy to imagine the opposite outcome without any
sort of retrofitting to accommodate it.
John Woo has been applauded - generally by the
sort of person whose pretentiousness takes the form
of inverted snobbery - as a maestro capable
of transforming bombs and bullets into a gorgeously kinetic oriental ballet, or poem
of violence (perhaps his
apologists are confusing him with Takeshi Kitano).
Any intelligent person will realize that it is false to state that a dog will NEVER turn on an owner if its raised without any
sort of abuse. This is what makes
apologists for certain dog breeds like pitbulls hard to listen to.
