Formalist technics can be worked seamlessly into modern films, like the comic book qualities of Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, or they can be sloppy, like every time a current Top 40 hit makes its way into
the soundtrack of a period piece.

period is nicely captured — though never heightened — by Edward Lachmann's grainy, shallow - depth Super 16 photography, while much
of the mood - setting is achieved by Sandy Powell's wonderful clothes and Carter Burwell's
soundtrack, which is reminiscent
of Philip Glass's spare but highly emotive piano
pieces.
This otherwise grim
period piece arrives blessed with a retro
soundtrack featuring James Brown's African - American anthem «Say It Loud, I'm Black & I'm Proud,» Bill Withers» haunting, R&B classic «City
of the Angels,» and Nina Simone's searing rendition
of «Ooh Child.»
