This interplay of history, narrative and perspective is further typified by «Overstood,» a towering sequin silhouette on
the south wall of the gallery accompanied by a group of simulated African statues carved by the artist appearing to cast the tall shadows.
The most impressive parts of the installation are the large - scale wall paintings of bricks on the north and
south walls of the gallery, painted flush with the floor and ending just a few feet below the high gallery ceiling.
The one chosen by the gallery staff was carrying out of Mr. Kaltenbach's proposal to paint

A freestanding
wall on either end
of the
gallery frames the space, one covered with handwritten testimonials from the sitters in the photos («Here in
South Africa you have judges sending women to jail for stealing a loaf
of bread to feed her baby, but men who gang rape women, who murder lesbians, who beat their wives, they walk the street as free men.»)
Like so much at the

Gallery, the overall simplicity
of the space hides some surprise; the west
wall pivots to open a continuous field between the back garden and the interior.

Installed on a royal - blue portion
of the
gallery's
walls, her Landscape (Chain Link Fence View for W.S.) and BLACK LIVES MATTER (Transformation)(both 2016) read as rubbings
of a chain - link fence and signs from the social movement, respectively, poignantly speaking to the racial disparities still prevalent in the
South.
What could be interpreted as an abstract idea made sense when you look at Gates's work, most prominently a series
of project spaces in
South Side Chicago that located art outside the
walls of galleries and institutions.
As the Philly Block Project has figuratively broken down
walls in
South Kensington, the exhibit will visually transform PPAC's
Gallery into a reflection
of these diverse streets.
