I am not vegan, but I have a child with egg,
soy, and dairy
allergies and it is nice to be able to make this traditional bread safe for him (I did use rice milk rather
than soy milk but I'm used to making that substitution).
I made it
allergy - free with Coconut Amino acids rather
than soy sauce, sunbutter and sunflower seeds.
Sun butter is a peanut butter like spread made from sunflower seeds for those with nut and
soy allergies (and it tastes better
than soynut butter.)
Keep in mind that infants with milk and
soy allergies will usually have more symptoms
than just gas, including diarrhea, vomiting, hives, wheezing, bloody stools, and / or irritability.
While some children are born with
allergies to certain foods, others develop food
allergies over time, according to the NIH, which also points out that children are more likely
than adults to outgrow milk, eggs or
soy allergies.
Unless your child has a milk - protein
allergy (which should include symptoms more severe
than simple gassiness, fussiness, or spitting up), then changing formulas from one brand to another or from cow's milk to
soy milk really doesn't make much sense.
Dealing with any food
allergy is a challenge, especially when you find yourself coping with more
than one of the common food allergens: gluten, wheat, dairy, or eggs, as well as
soy, corn, tree nuts, or peanuts.
These types of formulas trigger food
allergies in babies less often
than soy or cow's milk formulas, according to the American Academy of
Allergy and Asthma Immunology.
