space communications relays, commercial companies may be in the best position to provide a viable solution.

In order to truly expand into deep
space, commercial companies must develop viable, efficient satellite
relay alternatives to the DSN or other state - run
communication networks.
In 1998, Readdy, then deputy associate NASA administrator for
space operations, helped arrange for the National Science Foundation (NSF) to repurpose satellites in the Tracking and Data
Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) for
communications support in Antarctica.
Their goal is to test new miniaturized deep
space communication equipment and, if the MarCOs make it to Mars, may
relay back InSight data as it enters the Martian atmosphere and lands.
