But
space posed a unique design constraint on Stearns: solar
radiation and extreme environmental temperature shifts would melt and degrade the paint and ink he worked with, making them
hazards to the delicate optical hardware in the satellites.
«These data are a fundamental reference for the
radiation hazards in near Earth «geospace» out to Mars and other regions of our sun's vast heliosphere,» says CRaTER principal investigator Nathan Schwadron of the UNH Institute for the Study of Earth, Oceans, and
Space (EOS).

CRaTER's seminal measurements now provide quantified,
radiation hazard data from lunar orbit and can be used to calculate
radiation dosage from deep
space down to airline altitudes.
The data provide critical information on the
radiation hazards that will be faced by astronauts on extended missions to deep
space such as those to Mars.
And
space physicians still need to find ways to limit other
hazards of human spaceflight that don't have anything to do with weightlessness, such as disturbed sleep and exposure to cosmic
radiation.
Such missions would require learning how to deal with the
hazard of
space radiation, he said.
And yeasts, it turns out, have a unique survival mechanism for one of the biggest
hazards in
space:
radiation.
