First modern spaniel breeds were developed in 1800s but the first mention
of spaniel type dogs dates back to 1300s.
They were first bred as a
general spaniel type — used for flushing and retrieving game during gun hunting — but eventually split off into seven different spaniel breeds.
In the 19th century, the rise of dog shows, coupled with Victorian England's mania for classification, led to designating the
various spaniel types as official breeds.
Although the Cocker
Spaniel type originated in the United Kingdom, by the 1940s the American breed was recognized as distinct from the English breed.
It is a fact, however, that the toy spaniel was refined and established as a breed in England, and there is no doubt that there were inclusions of
sporting spaniel types in the bloodlines too.
How did our breed, and our breed standard, come about, once dogs of
spaniel type arrived in the British Isles?

Though the origins are never confirmed, it is widely believed that the Maltese dog originated from Spitz or
