There is «conclusive or substantial evidence» that marijuana or related compounds can effectively treat chronic pain, nausea caused by chemotherapy treatment for cancer, and
spasticity caused by multiple sclerosis, according to a report published today by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
Previously, Russo oversaw international clinical trials for Sativex, an oral spray made by GW Pharmaceuticals in Salisbury, U.K., that has been approved in 27 countries for treating
spasticity caused by multiple sclerosis and in Canada for certain types of pain.

The updated guideline covers four neurologic disorders:
spasticity in adults, which is muscle tightness that interferes with movement typically following a stroke, spinal cord or other neurologic injury; cervical dystonia, a disorder of the brain affecting neck muscle control that
causes involuntary head tilt or neck movement; blepharospasm, a movement disorder that
causes the eyes to close uncontrollably; and chronic and episodic migraine.
Mitochondrial diseases include Leigh syndrome, a progressive and fatal disorder characterized by lesions on the brain that may lead to heart, kidney, vision and breathing complications, and Alpers Disease, a neurologic illness that
causes seizures, dementia,
spasticity, blindness, liver dysfunction and cerebral degeneration.
The new study is based on the development of mouse models manifesting the disease that
causes megalencephaly,
spasticity and ataxia in humans.
