Dolby Laboratories led the charge into this new era of surround sound awesome with Dolby Atmos, a system which improves on the surround sound of yore by liberating so - called «sound objects» from the confines of strictly prescribed channels, allowing them to zip around a room unfettered, moving from one speaker to the next seamlessly — and that includes an array of new
speakers placed above listeners.
Two things make Atmos different: Object - based sound mixing, and sound coming from
speakers placed above you.
As one part of the installation, there's a cubicle with
a speaker placed above head level where you hear words, in alphabetical order, that might provoke «interesting topics of conversation».
Not exact matches
The most basic set up is to
place speakers on either side of the TV, another two beside or slightly behind the sitting position, and the final one in the center, either
above or below the TV.
In most cases, that's the only
place you'd want to use the
speakers, but put it in, say, a car, and you probably won't hear it
above the road and engine noise.
In the
above image, you can see some buttons
placed up on right side of the device, and there's big
speaker grill on the back side, and a microphone on front side.
It has a customized 1 - inch tweeter for added dialog clarity and tiltable feet to allow for the best positioning when the
speaker can't be
placed directly below or
above a screen.

While each company calls their system something different — Yamaha calls their system YPAO, or Yamaha Parametric room Acoustic Optimizer, seen
above — the general premise of the systems is that a small microphone is hooked up to the receiver,
placed where the listener's head would be during routine use, and then a series of tones and signals are sent over the
speakers to test for things like echo, muddy sound, and other artifacts.
Placing the Subwoofer: First, let's
place the subwoofer (4 in the diagram
above) as it's the simplest
speaker to
place.
The left and right sides house a dual
speaker system, something I was equally impressed by as the
speakers sat just
above where I
placed my hands.
Samsung has also
placed the
speaker of the Galaxy A8 + on the right - hand side, just
above the power button, which is an awkward position as I would find myself often covering the
speaker while holding the device with both hands to watch videos.
Speaker vent is on the right side just
above the power button — usually
speaker is
placed on the back or bottom.
This is ideal for when you want to
place your
speakers high
above the listening position.
Dolby Atmos adds a couple of extra left and right
speakers to a conventional 5.1 setup, either
placed above listening height or, more commonly, by firing sound at an angle upwards to the ceiling which bounces back to the listener, creating the illusion of all - encompassing sound.
Next,
place your surround
speakers above ear level (somewhere between 48 inches and 72 inches) and just behind your listening position.
Above the display up front, we've also go a front - facing camera sensor in the same
place as the previous Pixel, but the earpiece has been replaced by a front - facing
speaker, a welcome revival from the Nexus 6 / 6P.
The two
speakers that sit at each corner along the front bezel aren't as immersive as the four on the Qosmio X305 - Q725 and the Dell M1730 (on those rigs, the
speakers are
placed above and below the keyboard so that sound is blasting upward instead of at your gut).
If I had to
place it somewhere in the pantheon of
speakers, the Tap comes in well
above both the Beats Pill and Bose SoundLink Mini, but doesn't quite rank quite as high in my book as Creative's Sound Blaster Roar 2 or the Razer Leviathan Mini.
Pro Logic IIz allows the addition of two «front height»
speakers that are
placed above and between the main stereo
speakers.
Most experts recommended that surround
speakers be
placed approximately 2 feet
above ear level.
