those special acts of kindness that truly reminds us of what life is all about....
«Freeing God from the burden of
special acts of creation does not remove Him as the source of the things that make humanity special, and of the universe itself.
Some attach a special meaning to the word revelation, making a distinction between the revelation of God in everyday events and in nature and special revelation which refers to
special acts of God in history.
According to Ogden, God's general activity as Creator and redeemer is literally the ground and destiny of every historical event.139 But some particular events are properly viewed as
special acts of God.
To interpret significant events as
special acts of God is to turn God into an agent of mechanical intervention.
The famous Dr. Charles Hodge of Princeton Seminary pointed to this when he said that in Darwinism «species owe their origin, not to the original intention of the mind; not to
the special acts of creation calling new forms into existence at certain epochs; not to the constant and everywhere operative efficiency of God, guiding physical causes in the production of intended effects; but the gradual accumulation of unintended variations of structure and instinct.
«36 And, even in the case of the types of events which are uniquely adapted to becoming
special acts of God, i.e. human words and deeds, the specialness is still due only to human doing.
Now we must see how this discussion relates to the question of
special acts of God.
They, like Jesus, make the most of every opportunity to give the gospel message along with
special acts of service.
But they do not follow by
a special act of divine wrath or retribution; they follow by the reaction of God's loving power against that which violates love.
If my understanding as to what would constitute an act which is peculiarly someone's is accepted, then Ogden's explanation of
a special act of God is not adequate.
For one condition of an adequate explanation would be that it somehow attribute the specialness of
a special act of God partially to God.
As in the human example, not only must the nature of the event be appropriate in order to have
a special act of God, God's intention must also have a sufficiently large influence in determining the nature of the action.
For an event to be
a special act of God, the special - ness of it would have to be partially a function of God35 However, according to Ogden's explanation of what constitutes a special act, this is not the case.
Of course,
a special act of God is to some extent an expression of God, but so is every event; the thing that differentiates
a special act of God from an ordinary one is not at all due to anything done by God.
He says that any event can become
a special act of God «insofar as it is received by someone as a symbol of God's creative and redemptive action.
But the resurrection, as pointed out in the last chapter, is
a special act of God.
It is really impossible to affirm this totally and also to do full justice to the notion of
a special act of God» (p. 219f).
This fact alone may make some people wonder how intrinsically related the body is to the soul if it takes
a special act of God to resurrect it.
It suggests that the latter should more properly be called «special - creationism», for what it really teaches is that every life - form is made by
a special act of creation, and it counsels Christians not «to present God's creative design as if he were granddad in the potting shed with components on a shelf, a workbench and a pencil behind his ear!»
David Griffin's christological reflections are devoted to the task of finding a way to affirm, meaningfully, that Jesus was a «
special act of God,» in order to be able to say that to respond in faith to Jesus or to accept Jesus as genuinely revelatory is appropriate.
Of this fact and its inescapable significance as representing
a special act of God I have said enough perhaps in preceding chapters, but it is especially important that this should be remembered in connection with this discussion of the miracles.
