In South Carolina,
teachers must pass the Praxis II: Principles of Learning and Teaching test for their grade level and the Praxis II: Subjects Assessments /
Specialty Area Tests that are required for their
specialty areas.
Although the plan specified that additional math
teachers and tutors should be hired, this did not occur — at first due to shortages in these
areas among job candidates; later due to the state - appointed Special Master's introduction of Teach for America, which brought corps members with no particular
specialty and no education background; and, finally, because of the persistent lack of funds.
The Praxis PPST (Pre-Professional Skills Test) fulfills the Basic Skills Test requirement in Hawaii, and
teacher candidates must pass the Praxis II: Subject Tests in their
specialty area.
A supported entry experience would allow prospective and new
teachers to observe educators with a diverse array of skills and who teach a variety of subjects and grade levels, much like the rotations of the first year of a medical residency provide doctors insight into various
specialty areas of medicine.
Teachers may also need training in more advanced or broader content within
specialty areas.
Most
teacher candidates are interested in other
specialty areas, Lucero noted, and it takes particular dedication, compassion, and training to be able to work effectively with students with a variety of disabilities.

area, and then request reimbursement.
