During each parenting class, a
volunteer parent shares a
specific challenge with a child and you, the facilitator, lead the parent through a 14 step process that includes
role - playing to «get into the child's world,» and involves the whole group to brainstorm for solutions.
Each student then
volunteers to take on a
specific leadership
role, such as being the group scribe (who is responsible for taking notes and paperwork), the marshal (who keeps the team on schedule), and the liaison (who interacts with the teachers on the group's behalf).
Volunteers must attend a general orientation and will receive training
specific to the
role.
If students have already begun preparing for their
roles it provides SLS
volunteers with an opportunity to address more
specific questions, often dealing with strategy and counter-points.
On your way to that goal, you may choose to
volunteer for leading projects, take charge of
specific client relationships, or begin to play a more active
role in coaching and mentoring the people around you.
When looking at
volunteer opportunities, try searching for programmatic
roles that allow you to take ownership of a
specific project.
If you aren't able to gain
role -
specific work experience, it will show commitment towards working in the field if you either manage to: a) get some work shadowing in, for example, your local planning office or a similar related department; or b)
volunteer with an environmental charity.
Be prepared to provide
specific examples of how and where you have utilized your assets to successfully carry out work or
volunteer roles, academic projects, or other productive endeavors.
For each asset, think of a
specific time when you demonstrated that quality in a work or
volunteer role.
