The abandoned west coast main line rail franchise could be followed by the scrapping of the Department for Transport's controversial planned high
speed rail network linking London with Birmingham, its opponents are hoping.
Tolls on motorways and charges for lorry drivers would be used to fund a major upgrade of the
rail network, including high
speed train lines such as a London - Edinburgh
link, under plans set out by the party today.
