According to the Catechism in the Book of Common Prayer a sacrament is «an outward and visible sign of an inward and
spiritual grace given unto us, ordained by Christ himself; as a means whereby we receive the same, and a pledge to assure us thereof».

Indeed, it becomes an explicit theological axiom for Luther that inward and
spiritual grace is
given only in and through the public, bodily, sacramental practice of the Church.

gave us his
grace which is like sunshine to our souls so that our hearts would naturally seek him and grow in
spiritual depth and maturity.
