The vibrant American Church became fractious: Many priests and religious abandoned their spiritual callings for the world; some theologians dispensed with their obligations to work with the Magisterium; evangelization suffered; loyalty to Church teaching was rejected in favor of a misguided notion of «conscience;» and dogma and truth were repudiated.

In fact we would argue that true development of doctrine, including the social teaching of the Church, is only possible on the basis of the orthodox doctrinal and spiritual principles.

I know heartbreaking cases of people in such Churches who have sunk into deep spiritual depressions, no longer able to bear the teaching that God CAUSES billions of humans to eternally burn in hell.

Being skeptical is nothing to be criticized, as virtually every believer is or ought to be skeptical, not only of things they are taught at church, but also of their personal spiritual / religious beliefs.
