The series, based on a British sitcom of the same name, traffics in a soft -
spoken kind of comedy that I'm tempted to call «gentle,» but that would belie the series's finely honed edge.
It does remind me
of a public lecture in which Harvard biblical scholar Jon Levenson, who is Jewish, once defined anti-Semitism as «hating Jews more than is necessary», obviously the
kind of remark whose success as
comedy turns on the context in which it is
spoken and the one who
speaks it.
