The current
basement stair wall could be opened up to make the hallway feel more spacious, and the existing cabinet could be snazzed up a bit to look more like a butler's pantry, even though it is located in the hall, because it would be a convenient location for overflow platters and dishes.
The painting will hang on my giant one and a half
story stair wall, as you can see it hanging here as a work in progress...
In the hallway, the owners went for a pale grey shade throughout, with a darker
tonal stair wall to add interest.
The hall skylight reflects light off the
side stair walls, cascading down to the lower levels.
I have the basics on
my stair wall now.
The darker walls in the dining / living / entry /
stair wall are Behr Studio Taupe.
Under
the stair wall on the living room side, I set up a cozy little reading nook.
So if you are looking at the stairs going up in the foyer, there is a corner where the hall wall meets
the stair wall directely at the top of the stairs on the right side.

We are waiting to install batten in our tiny foyer on up
the stair wall (before the babies arrive), but don't want to begin until we know how to not make the same mistake.
Would you please share with me the paint color on
the stair wall?
They are of similar style to the new wall sconces on
my stair wall (which I'll show you in a separate post soon about my stairs), but they are unique and special so I'm excited they will have a prominent place in my kitchen.
For
this stair wall, my only «theme» to tie it all together was a bit of a sea or nautical feeling.

I was going to put it in my grouping of baskets on the wall by my front door but once I got home and looked at it, I decided it actually looked better by itself on
my stair wall.
There were some coordinating sconces on
the stair wall and we replaced those with outdoor lanterns as well.
Have totally always wanted to have
stairs walled on both sides, so that the steps themselves become the focal point.
We dramatically amped up the character and aesthetic of the staircase by: removing the old carpet; refinishing the treads in the same grey stain as the floors; painting out the posts, banister, and spindles in white; and by carrying the wainscoting up
the stair wall.

I just wanted them in a small area, to accent
the stair wall, but I've seen bold stripes in small bathrooms and they look great!
When curating
a stair wall, focus on filling the height of the space first and as much as possible.
A stair wall is a great space for an in - home art gallery, just be aware that this is usually a large area to cover.
