During a 6 - month stay on the island of Aruba in 2006, Tom says the people there helped him learn that being successful in life was about more than just accomplishing
the standard societal expectations (go to school, get a job, buy a house, etc.).
I also think we could do a lot better at figuring that out if we could have real discussions about the issue, including distinguishing what is actually «the
standard» and what are related, but independent concepts (eg, curriculum, student / teacher paradigms) and more substantive questions like developmental appropriateness, aligning
expectations to
societal needs — and justifying those needs and that alignment — etc, etc....
Complicating matters is the fact that different generations appear to have different notions of privacy and that may eventually play into what constitutes a «reasonable
expectation of privacy» since
societal values form a foundation for an «objective»
standard.
