While the level design and game mechanics are obviously at the heart
of Cloudbuilt, one
of the first things that
stood out to me and made me
love it from the start was the soundtrack and
art design.
Whether it's the military industrial complex, the horrors
of war, or a teen girl's journey to find herself and discover
love, gaming seems to be attempting to make those pushes to prove it can
stand on its own as any other form
of art.
A Satyr (3 Legged Satyr, 2004) and a sketch
of a Centaur (The Wounded Centaur, 2004) are a sly nod to Matthew Barney; and two
standing figures fucking (
Love in
Art School III, 2004) parodies late - period Picasso à la Tracey Emin.
Sol LeWitt is one
of those artists whose work doesn't really move me, but I
love what he
stands for in
art history.
While Bob Thompson lived he
stood up to the demands
of his gifts, and to the history
of visual
art, and to those painters he most admired, using it all to tell a spiritually gory tale
of love and glory.
The prints in the exhibition are a celebration
of and testament to Steir's long
standing love for the
art of printmaking.
