Instead of self -
editing, and making my own cover, and throwing it onto KU, I
started my own company, and I decided that I was going to release a
book that was competitive with and indistinguishable from a release by a major publishing house.
And I think what can happen if you're just
starting out with fiction is you think you have to write some massive, massive
book, and that takes a lot of work, a lot of
editing.
While the
book is in
edits, I
start loading the
book and the
book's metadata up on distributor and retail sites (which can be, if you use a lot of distributors, something of a tedious process).
My guess is it won't be long before Dymocks
start to offer (for a fee) the services of an editor and some spiel about
edited novels getting pride of place on their D Publishing
book shelf.
While
starting with beta readers is a fantastic idea, going without professional
book editing altogether is a mistake.
