I've enjoyed playing this so much that having completed all the current early access stuff I've just
started endless mode to see how far I can get.

I actually would recommend players try to make it through the missions before
starting in on assault or
endless modes because they serve as a great tutorial for some of the strategy required to do well at higher difficulty levels.
One of our creative leads is a big fan of Donkey Kong Country, and thought the barrel cannon mechanic was brilliant and could provide the core mechanic we were looking for, so he
started working on a prototype that used a similar mechanic but with portrait orientation and an
endless mode.
The
endless mode which challenges players to survive the standard game's cycle of randomized stages and boss fights with a more robust
starting loadout but reduced health is also a nice touch.
