It may seem surprising to people, but you can look at something like Mars, which has a very thin
atmosphere, and you can look at something like Venus which we tend to think
of as sort
of having this rather heavy, clouded
atmosphere, which [is] hellishly
warm because
of runaway greenhouse effect, and on both
of those planets you are seeing this phenomenon
of the
atmosphere leaking away, is actually what directly has led to those very different outcomes for those planets; the specifics
of what happened as the
atmosphere started to go in each case [made] all the difference.
All
of the committee members and the three co-chairs emphasized the need for businesses to
start examining these issues and pressing for public policy solutions now, due to the fact that greenhouse gases emitted today can last in the

atmosphere today, which is why scientists take into account historical emissions as well as present day ones to work out a country's contribution to climate change.

warming, white roads would be COOL literally helping to act like the poles... for those
of you that understand this PLEASE help promote this idea and you can help now by coating your old tarmac drive with bonded white chippings,
start a business doing it, easy cheap startup, loads

warming the world's
atmosphere at such a rate that most

If we wind up emitting an extra gigatonne [billion metric tons]
of CO2 into the
atmosphere this year, it commits the Earth to a certain amount
of additional
warming that can't be taken back — a
warming that
starts to emerge within decades but will still be with us after thousands
of years.
@ 48 If your speculation is correct, I assume that another consequence would be that, if / when concentrations
of greenhouse gases
start to drop, corresponding reductions in surface ocean / land temperatures would take place at a much slower rate than would otherwise be the case: the surplus heat stored in the deep ocean will gradually make its way to the ocean surface, and continue to
warm the
atmosphere for decades, if not longer.
Earth's
atmosphere has already
warmed by 0.8 C since the
start of the Industrial Revolution in the mid-18th century, and carbon dioxide (CO2) that is being emitted today will linger for centuries to come.
How about if the increase in CO2 concentration in the
atmosphere is due to the release
of CO2 from the sea as a result
of global
warming that
started 160 years ago?
We've only had 0.8 C
warming since humanity
started burning fossil fuels and we're already committed over the next 100 years to another 0.6 C
warming with what's already in the
atmosphere because
of the huge time lags in the climate system.
The increased amounts
of greenhouse gases our activities are adding to the
atmosphere have upset the balance that was in place since the end
of the last ice age and the Earth is getting
warmer than it was before we

Did
warming of the earth ever

A generally accepted answer is that a doubling
of carbon dioxide in the
atmosphere (it turns out that one gets the same value for a doubling regardless
of what value one
starts from) would perturb the energy balance
of Earth about 2 percent, and this would produce about 2 degrees Fahrenheit
warming in the absence
of feedbacks.

While it is true that most
of the CO2 - caused
warming in the
atmosphere was there before humans ever
started burning coal and driving SUVs, this is all taken into account by computerized climate models that predict global
warming...
In order to meet the evolutionary challenge
of an environment that no longer will accept the byproducts
of human activity without destroying our future, we will have to care enough about ourselves and future generations to institute new systems and sets
of rules that coordinate nationally and internationally our use
of the environment,
starting with the concentration
of warming gases in the
atmosphere.
You
start with the maximum amount

atmosphere while still having a reasonable chance to keep global
warming below 2C.
Santa's elves got fed up freezing their asses off in slavish servitude to the jolly elf, and so they all went out and bought heaters, fired»em up, and
started the polar ice melting,... which scared the crap out
of the reindeer — LITERALLY, more crap, which caused more greenhouse gases to enter the
atmosphere, which caused more polar
warming, which caused more ice to melt, which caused wind patterns to change, thus, driving the wee cloud -
warming fairies out
of their
warm clouds, creating colder temperatures, transferred by the changing wind patterns, intercepted by all Northern Hemisphere unicorns that inhaled it and exhaled it about the continent to produce record cold temperatures.
after the

atmosphere.
Since to me (and many scientists, although some wanted a lot more corroborative evidence, which they've also gotten) it makes absolutely no sense to presume that the earth would just go about its merry way and keep the climate nice and relatively stable for us (though this rare actual climate scientist pseudo skeptic seems to think it would, based upon some non scientific belief — see second half
of this piece), when the earth changes climate easily as it is, climate is ultimately an expression
of energy, it is stabilized (right now) by the oceans and ice sheets, and increasing the number
of long term thermal radiation / heat energy absorbing and re radiating molecules to levels not seen on earth in several million years would add an enormous influx
of energy to the lower
atmosphere earth system, which would mildly
warm the air and increasingly transfer energy to the earth over time, which in turn would
start to alter those stabilizing systems (and which, with increasing ocean energy retention and accelerating polar ice sheet melting at both ends
of the globe, is exactly what we've been seeing) and
start to reinforce the same process until a new stases would be reached well after the atmospheric levels
of ghg has stabilized.

The reason this
warms the surface is most easily understood by
starting with a simplified model
of a purely radiative greenhouse effect that ignores energy transfer in the
atmosphere by convection (sensible heat transport) and by the evaporation and condensation

As a
starting point, I think sat - temps are high enough in the
atmosphere to eliminate or minimalize UHI «contamination», but IMO it's not impossible that UHI could produce plumes
of localized
warm areas above / downwind
of large developed regions at sat - temp elevations, but I don't know for sure.
