(Just to clear up the obvious question,
the starter motor works every time, it just takes a while for the engine to engage.)
I haven't investigated anything yet, but I understand how
starter motors work from a high level, and am I'm leaning toward this being an issue with the gears in the start motor.

Most car
starter motors (in fact all that I have
worked with) do not use permanent magnets, instead opting for coils for the stator.
The VW had less than 50 miles transmission stopped
working due to coffee spill, at 50k Thermostat stuck closed, then Coil pack, cracked coolant tank, abs module, 3 faulty engine coolant sensor, complete lower and upper suspension, vacuum hose leak,
starter, bad ground cable, driver window fell off the rail, AC stopped
working, heater core clogged, hood cable broke, moon roof slides open on it's own,
motor / transmission mounts, front snub mounts, 3 cracked oil pan for being to close to ground, driver window switch, rear light housing, + usual maintenance.
This sounds like the bearing in the
starter motor - it could continue to
work for a while or seize / stick soon.
So the manufacturers designed the
starter motor to
work in the isolated manner ie the
starter motor alone was directly connected to the battery with a solenoid (Bendex or electromagnetic contact).
If you are positive that the alternator is
working fine but still your car is not starting up then there might be issue with the
starter motor (which i am sure the mechanic must have noticed)
The battery can be low enough that the
starter motor will not
work, but the fuel pump and ecu will still operate.
Cheapest and easiest thing to rule out is a problem with the fuses and connections leading to the
starter motor, which can also result in the same combination of clicking noises while failing to start with power
working for the rest of the car.
When directly applying 12 volts to it, via jumping it with a screwdriver, it
works, powering the
starter motor; however, the bendix drive (or whatever type of clutch mechanism it is called officially — sprag clutch?
Even though you can take the
starter to an auto parts store to check it and they ok, it's standard operation (ie: the
motor works under load and they can engage the solenoid) they seem to never be able to check if the solenoid is draining, only that it shoots out the bendix fully.
The
starter generator positioned between the crankshaft and the transmission handles recuperation and, if required, can
work in the opposite direction as an additional electric
motor.
One solution could be changing the
starter motor, but this doesn't always
work
The BAS concept
works by replacing the belt - driven alternator and
starter motor with an electric
motor that serves as a generator and a
motor.
