In people with HIV, low vitamin D levels have been linked to thicker carotid arteries as well as a weaker comeback for the immune system after
starting antiretroviral therapy.
Inflammation can be a driving factor for heart disease, but in the study, low vitamin D was not linked to higher levels of inflammation markers. Additional research could determine whether those who are
starting antiretroviral therapy would see better immune recovery if they took a vitamin D supplement.
They not only underscore the importance of
starting antiretroviral therapy very early in the infection but also highlight the need for a vaccine that can protect mucosal surfaces.
Investigators report today that
starting antiretroviral therapy early reduced HIV transmission by 93 percent over the course of the study.
They also studied cells taken from HIV - infected individuals before and after
they started antiretroviral therapy, and before and after treatment interruptions.
In addition, the investigators found that among the HPTN 052 participants who
started antiretroviral therapy early but failed treatment before May 2011, those who had a higher viral load when they joined the study were likely to develop resistance to their antiretroviral drugs.
For many years, clinicians debated the best time to
start antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV infection, with some worrying that the risks of treatment in terms of drug toxicities could outweigh the benefits of controlling the virus.
