I've done a lot of research writing on both why / how things go wrong in organizations when we want to «do good» right, and how to do start - ups that are safe zones at the beginning and sustainable to the end.

There's a military adage that no plan survives first contact and Phantom Pain displays this every time you spend 15 minutes scouting the perimeter, planning a perfect ingress / egress from a heavily fortified compound, then creep in, start popping headshots on unsuspecting guards and have the whole thing go to shit so you switch to shock and awe as you dash to and from your objective, ducking in and out of buildings, laying down cover fire, and make a safe zone to extract your target before calling in a helicopter strike to reduce everything in the area to a smoking crater before walking out of the ashes and flying off to your next objective all because stupid Quiet didn't notice one target on her scouting run.

Most stealth games start the player off in a safe zone — Gunpoint begins with you standing outside of your objective, for instance, and Dishonored has you sitting on a little boat.

This gives rise to a highly cautious style of stealth play I like to call janitor syndrome where you iteratively expand your safe zone from the start of the game onwards, cleaning up every guard, every trap, every obstacle.

Also, players will usually (about 80 % of the time, says Daybreak) be able to see the area of the starting safe - zone (the circle of gas) before they spawn, which will also help them decide where to land.

And while there are other, smaller safe zones scattered throughout the city, most players will probably want to start back at base to manage their Skills and equipment before hitting the streets.

For now, you'll start your quests at the base camp, a safe zone away from all the pointy, dangerous creatures.
