U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced Thursday that California would receive $ 69 million this year as its share of the School Improvement
Grant program -
money aimed at restructuring the
state's lowest performing schools.
It was a year ago and a week that Gov. Chris Christie fired Bret Schundler as his education commissioner over what was a mishap on the
state's failed application for federal Race to the Top
money, a
grant that
aimed to put in place this very evaluation system statewide.
While RttT seemed to get all of the publicity, another pot of
money was almost as big — and it was spread among all
states: $ 3 billion in school improvement
grants aimed at fixing the schools that persistently rank in the bottom five percent in each
state.
Among them: the Energy Star program, which
aims to improve energy efficiency and save consumers
money; infrastructure assistance to Alaska Native villages and the Mexico border; a
grant program that helps cities and
states combat air pollution; and an office that focuses on environmental justice issues.
