She tries to broaden the range
of groups involved in
climate change research, and works with federal,
state and municipal government agencies and the private sector on science - based solutions.
Their study, published in the journal Geophysical
Research Letters, also found evidence that
climate change is skewing the proportion
of record high temperatures to record low temperatures in the continental United
States, with extremely hot days now outnumbering extremely cold days by 2 - to - 1.
«Rather than trying to assess the probability
of an extreme event occurring, a group
of researchers suggest viewing the event as a given and assessing to which degree
changes in the thermodynamic
state (which we know has been influenced by
climate change) altered the severity
of the impact
of the event,» notes Dorit Hammerling, section leader for statistics and data science at the Institute for Mathematics Applied to Geosciences, National Center for Atmospheric
Research.
«It is a bigger decline than we had expected,» said Philip Mote, director
of the Oregon
Climate Change Research Institute at Oregon
State University and lead author on the study.
The 45th president
of the United
States will confront a broad range
of global challenges, from addressing
climate change and securing our energy future to sustaining investments in scientific
research efforts in numerous areas, including medicine.
Washington
State University archaeologists are at the helm
of new
research using sophisticated computer technology to learn how past societies responded to
climate change.
The occasion was the release
of a report from the U.S. Global
Change Research Program titled Global
Climate Change Impacts in the United
States.
«In the last 30 years, there's been this growing synchrony where the whole West is getting warmer,» said Philip Mote, director
of the Oregon
Climate Change Research Institute at Oregon
State University.
Scientific
research can inform policies aimed at addressing the needs
of communities displaced by
climate change, something that is already happening in the United
States and around the world, according to experts at a 25 - 26 July meeting
of the AAAS Science and Human Rights Coalition.
Obama, he said, elevated the role
of science and technology advisers throughout the executive branch, put in place plans to mitigate and prepare the United
States for the impacts
of climate change, set up health
research initiatives to tackle such priorities as cancer and brain
research, worked with international partners on scientific issues and used the White House as a platform from which to herald science and education, particularly for children.
They include a set

state of Earth's
changing climate, an interesting list
of environmental scientists who are engaged in intriguing
research, and the premier
of a documentary hosted by our own David Biello that considers whether the U.S. could run entirely on electricity.
The new paper stems from a National Science Foundation - funded, interuniversity
research project which focuses on understanding how water sustainability in the United
States has
changed over the past 30 years as a result
of climate change and population growth.
The U.S. Global
Change Research Program, which coordinates the National
Climate Assessment report process, also released draft versions
of two other reports for public comment: the Second
State of the Carbon Cycle Report and the Fourth National
Climate Assessment.
Lonnie Thompson, Distinguished University Professor in the School
of Earth Sciences at The Ohio
State University and co-leader
of the international
research team, said that the new data lend support to computer models
of projected
climate changes.
The world
of forest ants may provide a macrocosm
of the complex reactions and interactions among species affected by global
climate change, according to a
research project involving Bowling Green
State University biologist Dr. Shannon Pelini.
One potential area
of cooperation between the United
States and Russia is scientific
research on
climate change, said Marlene Laruelle, a
research professor
of international affairs at George Washington University, during a CSIS panel discussion.
China's aging population and rapid migration to coastal urban centers will make the country more susceptible to effects
of climate change like rising sea levels and extreme weather events, recent
research by scientists at University College London and experts from the United
States, China and India has found.

Oregon and Washington are the number one and two softwood - producing
states in the nation, respectively; 20 these two
states plus Idaho produce more than $ 11 billion in primary wood product sales.21 Our review
of existing
research suggests the Northwest's forests will experience significant potential impacts from
climate change, in particular from wildfire — due to both increased drought and to wood damage from pests surviving warmer winters.

Mike Wallace's talk was about the «National

of uncertainty and how significant they are, describe the principal methodologies used and any problems with these approaches, and explain how central is the debate over the paleoclimate record within the overall
state of knowledge on global

The team consisted
of Vincent P. Gutschick, director
of the Global
Change Consulting Consortium, Inc., in Las Cruces, N.M., Zanna Chase, an assistant professor in the College
of Oceanic and Atmospheric Sciences at Oregon

climate science at the University
of Maryland, College Park, and Jim Bouldin, a
research ecologist at the University

Still, I was intrigued earlier this month when I heard from Renee Lertzman, a
research fellow in humanities and sustainability at Portland
State University, that she was speaking on «the myth
of apathy,» the subject
of a book she's writing, at «Engaging With
Climate Change: Psychoanalytic Perspectives,» a meeting
of psychoanalysts and behavioral researchers in London.
The U.S. Global
Change Research Program, composed
of 13 federal agencies, reported in 2009 that
climate - related
changes are already being observed in every region
of the world, including the United
States and its coastal waters.
Federal and
State agencies are planning for and integrating
climate change research into resource management and actions to address impacts
of climate change based on historical impacts, future vulnerabilities, and observations on the ground.
Ecological monitoring efforts need to be improved and better coordinated among Federal and
State agencies to ensure that the impacts
of climate change are adequately observed as well as to support ecological
research, management, assessment, and policy.

of the Penn

research on
climate change.

Pielke critiques the
state of flood
research, but sidesteps the strong evidence showing that extreme rainfall events have increased due to human - caused
climate change.
Their assessments
of the
state of knowledge on the subject are the «gold standard
of climate change information,» said Gerald Meehl, a senior scientist at the US government - funded National Centre for Atmospheric
Research and chair
of the National Academy
of Science.

of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) established a network

Phil Mote, director
of the Oregon
Climate Change Research Institute at Oregon State University, is skeptical of McPherson's predictions: «I've been connected to national and international assessments of the state of the science of climate change, and although my colleagues and I are generally very concerned about what challenges climate change is bringing to humankind, no expert that I have read has used language like «extinction of the human race.
