With all the talk
of Gov. Andrew Cuomo potentially pushing to reunify the IDC and so - called «regular» Democrats as payback for the Republicans» refusal to support a
statewide public campaign
finance system, I thought it would be worth checking it with the lone Democrat who is actually conferencing with the GOP: Brooklyn Sen. Simcha Felder.
It's argument Cuomo has made before, often in the context
of creating a
statewide public financing system for elections.
Last week, Garodnick and 26 other City Council members sent a letter to Gov. Cuomo in support
of his renewed pledge to support a
statewide bill for
public campaign
financing.
But absent the full
public financing of campaigns
statewide, Benjamin said «my experience, over time is that money, like water, finds a path.»
Adopt system
of public financing of campaigns, with new lower limits on direct contributions to
statewide and state legislative candidates; Establish the «New York State Campaign
Finance Fund», with transfers from the Abandoned Property Fund and taxpayer designations

finance system would include an expansion
of «the current pilot project for
public funding
of the Comptroller's race to all
statewide and legislative races.»
A
statewide public financing system to elevate average New Yorkers» voices in our elections, buttressed by other comprehensive reforms — like lower limits on how much one person can contribute to a political candidate (now at an outrageous $ 60,800 for
statewide candidates per election cycle) and strong independent enforcement
of campaign
finance laws — will reduce the power
of big money special interests.
