This
report presents the results of a project to estimate the percentage of U.S. elementary and secondary students being assessed on deeper learning skills through
statewide mathematics and English
language arts achievement tests at the beginning of the Deeper Learning Initiative.
Overall, 95 percent of Partnership schools increased their
statewide percentile in English
language arts, and nearly 90 percent improved in math, Public Impact's
report found.
The
report points out, however, that curriculum requirements in foreign
languages started out low: «Many states do not require high school students to take
language courses, and few have created
statewide foreign
language assessments» (p. 18).
On Monday, EdSource's Theresa Harrington
reported on a major challenge with the implementation of Common Core standards in California — ensuring teachers
statewide are prepared to effectively teach the new math and English
language arts curriculum.
