With all the talk
of Gov. Andrew Cuomo potentially pushing to reunify the IDC and so - called «regular» Democrats as payback for the Republicans» refusal to support a
statewide public campaign finance system, I thought it would be worth checking it with the lone Democrat who is actually conferencing with the GOP: Brooklyn Sen. Simcha Felder.
Adopt
system of public financing of campaigns, with new lower limits on direct contributions to
statewide and state legislative candidates; Establish the «New York State
Campaign Finance Fund», with transfers from the Abandoned Property Fund and taxpayer designations
of PIT liability; and limiting contributions to «housekeeping accounts» to $ 25,000.
The only answer is comprehensive
campaign finance reform, starting with a
statewide public financing system to elevate the voices
of average voters, who are too often forgotten amidst the search for big money.
The governor's proposals — including a
system of public campaign finance for all
statewide offices as well as the Assembly and Senate — did not advance in the final days
of the legislative session.
Karen Scharff, with Citizen Action, which is part
of a coalition advocating for a
statewide public campaign finance system, says DA Fitzpatrick's support is good news.
And Klein, who was initially ambivalent over whether the
public can get on board with a

financed campaigns, is embracing it.

of the Comptroller's race to all
statewide and legislative races.»
A
statewide public financing system to elevate average New Yorkers» voices in our elections, buttressed by other comprehensive reforms — like lower limits on how much one person can contribute to a political candidate (now at an outrageous $ 60,800 for
statewide candidates per election cycle) and strong independent enforcement
of campaign finance laws — will reduce the power
of big money special interests.
