It started off with a double - joint spring strut front suspension, featuring a lightweight aluminum control arms, wheel carriers and axle subframes — this setup is 11 pounds lighter than the same setup in steel.

The front - axle components, steering gear, engine and transmission are pre-mounted on a high - strength - steel subframe which is bolted securely to the body's side members, making it a key component in the front crash structure of the new E-Class: in the event of a frontal impact, the subframe forms a separate load - bearing path along which the impact energy is absorbed at specific points (see page 56).

The Ridgeline's engine, transaxle, transfer case, steering gear, and front suspension are all supported by a welded - steel subframe secured to the unit body's longitudinal rails through four tuned rubber isolation mounts.

The front end is held off the ground by MacPherson struts attached to a reinforced steel subframe, while the rear has five links and a coil spring connected to another stiff subframe.

Audi's car uses the same front and rear steel subframes as the rest of the competitors, as specified by the regulations.

The overall chassis is lighter, thanks to the use of aluminum instead of steel in areas like the front steering knuckles, and engineers retuned the front and rear subframes with larger bushings to improve lateral stiffness and NVH characteristics.
