In view of the fact that the
stock market action has gotten a bit
out of hand again this week, we are providing a brief update of
charts we have discussed in these pages over the past few weeks (see e.g. «The Flight to Fantasy»).
Taking this a step further, the
chart above shows that
out of the most recent 23 periods of higher rates (based on the 10 - year Treasury yield),
stocks have gained ground 19 of those times.
Despite analyzing the hell
out of
stock chart patterns, ensuring the technicals looked quite favorable before buying, I still found my trades completely going in the wrong direction way too often.
If you too have been making the same mistake of hyperfocusing only on the daily
charts, read on to find
out why you're missing the big picture of what's really happening with the
stocks and ETFs you trade.
Each year I put the new
chart in a plastic sleeve and when clients came into my office for a portfolio review, I would carefully point
out the dramatic differences in performance between this consumer staples
stock versus many of the cyclicals on the list, particularly Big Blue.
When a
stock or ETF is forming a bull flag
chart pattern and then gaps down sharply, it has the effect of washing
out the «weak hands» who sell a position that the first hint of trouble.
This
chart was produced in NFTRH 3 weeks ago to illustrate the extent of participation in this echo bubble (again, the bubble is in policy, not so much
stock prices this time), which is a cyclical version of the secular thing that blew
out in 2000.
It covers both fundamental analysis of shares, with particular emphasis placed on earnings per share (EPS) growth, and technical analysis, stressing the importance of buying
stocks which have moved
out of proper
chart bases.

Just compare the
charts of bitcoin to any major
stock market average and the relative value pops

It's important to note that on long - term
charts like this one, small distances actually represent weeks of data, including many days where
stocks advanced and everything looked just fine on a near - term basis, so we certainly shouldn't rule
out the typical «fast, furious, prone - to - failure» rallies that usually punctuate extended market slides.
Cash Allocations: I talked about this
chart in the video on the Global Risk Radar, specifically I talked about this alongside the
chart which showed valuations as expensive for the major assets (property,
stocks, and bonds), and how it reflects the trend where central banks have bullied investors
out of cash and into other assets.
The
chart below illustrates how the
stock market reflects the stalled
out economic recovery as reflected by The Conference Board's (CB) Coincident Economic Indicator Index (CEI).
The nosedive in
stocks has also discouraged consumer spending as have mounting layoffs (
Chart 5), maxed
out credit cards and tighter lending standards and weak consumer confidence.
This second trend borne from ultra-loose monetary policy has forced many investors to seek
out higher - yielding alternatives including dividend
stocks, which, on average, yield more than 10 - year government bonds in most major developed markets, including Canada (see
chart below).

How do you figure
out what those squiggly
stock charts mean?
But investors back then didn't have the advantage of being able to consult a
stock chart, as we can today, that showed them how it all played
out.
You can't look at a couple of days trading on a line
chart and find
out much about what a
stock is doing.
Inspect financial
charts to find
out in which phase the market and / or
stock is.
Resistance: A
charting pattern where a
stock price tops
out or levels off.
The annualized excess returns shown in the
chart are the
out (under) performance relative to the market — Large
Stocks.
Consider the
chart below, which shows forward dividend yields for all 691 dividend paying
stocks in the Russell 1000 broken
out into the 11 major industry groups.

In keeping with our example, here is how the
chart would be filled
out for the six
stocks we picked
out for our example portfolio, once we've taken our initial positions:
Schabacker asserted then, «any general
stock chart is a combination of countless different patterns and its accurate analysis depends upon constant study, long experience and knowledge of all the fine points, both technical and fundamental...» So whilst there is an abundance of patterns
out there, remember accurate analysis and sustained practice is required to fully reap their benefits.
Market in confirmed uptrend following a shift toward institutional buying (accumulation) and many leading
stocks breaking
out of
chart patterns.
If those investors who took a major hit had been following a set of investment rules and tracking the movement of their holdings on
stock charts, they would have gotten
out of the market in time.
You can do so by using something as simple as a free
stock charting and analysis tool, by checking
out educational investor material, or by opting for more sophisticated services like Morningstar or other
stock trading systems, which more serious investors and traders use.
I'm bemused to see: i) 40 % of these H1 2012 Top 10 Losers were actually in my original bottom 10 of TGISVP —
out of 70 + shares, not a bad forecast at all, and ii) 60 % of these H1 2012 Top 10 Losers remain in the new Bottom 15
Stocks chart above, despite their losses YTD!
